FAO, World Food Programme to assist farmers in Congo and Nigeria

The Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have stepped up efforts to assist farmers and alleviate hunger in Congo and Nigeria. FAO will supply food-growing kits, including cultivation tools and fruit and vegetable seeds to allow families to eat for two months and sell any food that is uneaten.

Earth will become a desert by 2050 if global warming isn't stopped: Study

The globe is set to start drying out dramatically if global warming isn't stopped. That's the message from a new environmental study published by the journal Nature Climate Change. Over 25% of Earth will start experiencing the effects of "aridificaiton" by the year 2050 if humans don't meet the changes proposed by the Paris climate agreement.

Caribbean looks to become world’s first climate-resilient region

As the Caribbean Community enters the new year, incoming CARICOM chairman and Haiti President Jovenel Moïse is moving to create the first climate resilient region in the world. 
He highlighted the rebuilding process after the hurricanes of last September, as well as Hurricane Matthew, which pounded the region on October 3-4, 2016.

Oceans, coral bleaching getting worse because of global warming

Corals are bleaching more and more often around the world because of warming ocean waters, a new study shows. Researchers analyzed data about bleaching events at 100 reef locations around the world from 1980 to 2016. They found that the rate of bleaching has increased more than fourfold in the past four decades — from once every 25 to 30 years back in the 1980s, to once every six years by 2016.

Wheat rust breakthrough from DNA research

In a world first, an international team including Australian researchers has developed a DNA test to check a plant’s resistance to rust. The test only takes several hours, compared to weeks for other methods, greatly improving the chances of saving a crop which could otherwise be severely reduced by rust.
