Bill Gates commits $300M to help farmers who suffer from global warming

Paris: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Wednesday, announced a $300 million grant to help farmers in Africa and Asia adapt to climate change through innovations in agriculture. The pledge was announced while Gates was attending the 2017 global climate summit in Paris, the second anniversary of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Florida's Orange production forecasted to hit 73-yr low after Hurricane Irma

The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) on Tuesday, released its latest projections for the 2017-2018 orange crop and downgraded Florida's orange projections for the month of December. The decimating effects of Hurricane Irma still haven’t been totally determined, but it’s possible the numbers could be as low as 40 percent or as high as 100 percent for some growers in Florida.

Spices Board organizes training prog for capacity building of farmers: India

Srinagar: Spices Board, Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry are organizing training programmes for the quality improvement and capacity building of saffron and chilli farmers of Kashmir Division. Director Agriculture Kashmir, Syed Altaf Aijaz Andrabi inaugurated the training programme Thursday and stressed on the adoption of organic farming emhasizing that the world market is open for our produce.

World Bank invests $4.5 billion to arm cities against climate change

Cash-short cities with big ambitions to protect themselves from climate change will be able to tap into $4.5 billion in loans and technical support from the World Bank, working with a global alliance of cities and local governments. Through the World Bank-led City Resilience Program, cities will be assisted to structure projects to make them more “bankable”.

Climate change made Hurricane Harvey's rainfall worse, study finds

Human-caused climate change made the rainfall from Harvey, which dumped more than 19 trillion gallons of water and brought devastating floods to the Houston area, roughly three times more likely to occur and 15% more intense, according to World Weather Attribution (WWA), in a report published Wednesday.

France offers Western Cape help with drought

Cape Town: France has offered the Western Cape assistance with the drought afflicting the region, French Consul-General Laurent Amar said on Wednesday. He said the finance would likely come from the French Development Agency, adding that it was ready to work with municipalities in the province.

South Dakota harvest rebounds following drought conditions

U.S. agriculture officials say timely rain, additional acres planted and improved seed hybrids helped salvage South Dakota’s harvest this year, despite the worst drought conditions in five years. The drought hit some farmers harder than others, but the statewide picture is better than agricultural officials expected at mid-summer.

Flood alert: Britain braced for heavy rain and flooding as snow thaws

Britain is braced for flooding with forecasts for heavy rain and melting snow sparking a raft of warnings for this weekend. Scotland, Wales, the Midlands and regions which saw the heaviest snowfall are on alert for flooding in the coming days. Forecasters predict temperatures could lift into double figures next week, but not before another spell of freezing conditions.

Yamuna water to resolve drinking, irrigation issues: India

Rajasthan state government has started preparations to bring Yamuna water into the state. It will be brought to Churu district via pipeline from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh and will be used for drinking and irrigation in Churu, Jhunjhunu and Sikar district. The Water Resources Department has prepared a project of Rs. 20 thousand crores for this.

India-Morocco inked pact on water resources, marine sector

India and Morocco signed agreements for cooperation on Thursday on water resources, road and marine sectors. 
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked to work jointly in water resources sector. While, an agreement was also signed for cooperation between Indian Maritime University (IMU) and Higher Institute of Maritime Studies (ISEM), Morocco.

EU €20 million grant to help Malaysia improve water resource management

A new European Union (EU) grant of €20 million will help improve water resource management and the productivity of the agricultural sector in Myanmar's central dry zone, according to a statement from the body. The ‘Irrigated Agriculture Inclusive Development Project’ (IAIDP), over the next seven years will support the Myanmar Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation in improving the living conditions and incomes of rural communities in the central dry zone.
